where is Calitzdorp?

Please share if you like our site

Calitzdorp is situated halfway between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town on the increasingly popular tourist route, Route 62, at the head of the Gamka valley of vines in the Little Karoo, Western Cape, South Africa. Winding over mountains, through valleys, farmlands and picturesque historic villages, Route 62 is an appealing, diverse, traffic free, scenic alternative to the seasonally congested N2 toll road further south. Ever increasing numbers of tourists are finding Calitzdorp an ideal stop over on a long journey.

Main towns on the R62, starting at the eastern end are Uniondale, De Rust, Oudtshoorn, Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Barrydale and Montagu to the west.

Calitzdorp is a small, growing country town in the Kannaland Municipality situated at an elevation of 233 meters above sea level. It has developed along a rich agricultural wine and fruit growing valley at the confluence of the Nel’s river (which fills the town’s dam), and major Gamka river (Khoi for ‘lion’) in the semi-arid Little Karoo in the southern Cape.

The Little Karoo is a unique broad valley only 40 to 60 kilometers wide and approximately 350 kilometers long lying between spectacular Cape Fold mountains; the Swartberg to the north, Langeberg and Outeniqua ranges to the south, and the Rooiberg to the south west of the town.

Wherever you travel in the Little Karoo, there are mountains around you.

Although semi-arid, the Little Karoo is well watered by perennial rivers, resulting in numerous fertile, green valleys crisscrossing the plain.

One enters Calitzdorp via the plain along Route 62 from Oudtshoorn, or through the imposing Huisrivier Pass to the West of the town, or over the Rooiberg Pass to the south west – the two passes are just a few kilometers from the centre of town.
