Calitzdorp museum, run entirely by volunteers in the old Standard Bank building, displays a charming, informative, condensed history of the town, farming district and its people. Well worth a visit.

Periodical outings and talks are arranged to inform friends of happenings in the area and these social, informative gatherings are greatly enjoyed by all. See here for some of the past events

Calitzdorp Museum

The Calitzdorp Museum is housed in the Old Standard Bank building which was built along with the attached manager’s  ‘Bank House’, in 1910, on the corner of Geyser and Van Riebeeck Streets. The building was designed by architect Johannes Egbertus Vixseboxse.

The Standard Bank was still leasing the building in 1982 after some ‘modernisation’ was done.

Today the building houses a little gem – a private museum showing the history of the town, run entirely by volunteers.

Displays include household items, kitchen utensils, clothing, farming implements, old documents, photographs and genealogy dating back to the very start of the town.

A hand made wooden water pipe shows the surprising innovation of the pre-plastic era – while the astonishing, old, wooden, hand cranked washing machine – which must have been an amazing invention in its day – must be seen to be believed!

Part of the museum houses a very successful second-hand book shop which stocks books of every kind – from popular fiction to rare collectors’ items. Donations for resale are gratefully accepted, and if you are a bookworm, please pop in and browse for some good inexpensive holiday reading.
